Proniño
Proniño, that literally means “for the child”, was founded in 1999 by a Honduran-American couple, George and Betty Mealer. Homeless Child has been supporting the project since 2003 and in early 2007 Proniño cares for well over 70 children and a small but growing number of youths have graduated.
Contact
In the streets we try to get in contact with the children and build a relationship of trust. Some of the children come to Proniño through the courts or they simply knock on the door.
Las Flores
In this temporary home, children can get used to a regular routine and if necessary they have to kick the drugs. Sports are a great way to build team spirit and self-confidence and after years of malnourishment it is important to build a strong body. To lessen hyperactivity and aggression, they start with a game of soccer in the morning, to use up abundant energy in a positive way. There’s a lot of attention on arts and crafts as well. It improves hand skills and stimulates creativity and concentration.
La Montaña
A center where, as well as normal classes, they receive vocational training in skills that are popular on the local job market. There’s also a sickbay and a dental clinic, to keep health care costs low. An agricultural program is being developed to offer children education as well as limit expenses for foods.
