Family planning

foto-AHMF-bijeenkomstHomeless Child started the collaboration with the organization ‘Asociación Hondureña de la Mujer y la Familia’ (AHMF) in September 2007. AHMF is a Honduran organization that has been active in (sex) education and family planning since 1994. They inform women about their rights, reproductions, contraceptives and venereal diseases. Men are always welcome, but they seem rather comprehensive in regard to these issues.
AHMF organizes meetings in the poorest neighborhoods of El Progreso. Next to education they also offer the possibility of buying contraceptives at low prices. This way AHMF wants to prevent more children from dying of famine, becoming orphans, or ending up on the streets, where a life of violence and abuse awaits them.
Homeless Child thinks that access to contraceptives does not guarantee a solution for poverty, but that it is part of the struggle to decrease the number of neglected children and to curb overpopulation. Homeless Child has therefore expanded the program with vocational training and in 2010 also a pilot for micro credit, to offer these women a better chance of an independent future in which they can provide better for their children.
Child care and access to health care for women and their children is equally vital.
