HOMELESS CHILD
Greet and Gerrit Klein Kranenbarg from Winterswijk are volunteering with the children for their fifth year. These are some of their experiences.
Dear all,
Here’s some news from Honduras. Proniño is functioning much better and more effective under the new management than before. The director is clearly the boss and he makes high demands and engages in team building, which seems rather good to us. We received updated lists of the boys and the schedule of the boys we are working with. Assistance with homework for the first grade up to and including the ninth grade, but also learning to read, write and do arithmetic. There are also some new boys who cannot read and write, because you cannot learn that on the streets.
The project Marieke de Lange organizes is really fantastic. Together with thirty boys, she’s been working on a stage play for a while, with the assistance of the local theatre and the arts centre. The theme is violence in families and on the streets. Saturday, the first of six performances will be held in central town square. Visit the website at www.ubuntutheatre.org and watch the movies on YouTube. From Friday to Sunday the Dutch Evangelical television station EO will be filming, which means more Dutch people in El Progreso.
Liduine, also from the Netherlands, has bought wood for new boxes. Today, the carpenter has been working very hard, together with the boys. The three new workshops have been opened festively yesterday, among others with the chairman of the committee, a surgeon. We went to the hospital and picked him up from between his patients.
We also visited the orphanage with its beautiful wing, paid for by Homeless Child, and we spoke with Ana Aleman. There are now 32 children from zero to nine years old living there, especially girls. At the Marie Stopes project we spoke with the new doctor Patricia and we will visit the neighborhood again with an education session on birth control.
The political situation is evolving positively. There will be a truth commission, including foreign diplomats, who will investigate the coup d’état of 2009. The president is acknowledged gradually by more and more countries. Many walls still have slogans and last weekend there were protest marches in two other cities.
Proniño has a new, third building, really beautiful. Next week, the first building will probably be tidied up by a group of students from the United States. This is the building of the newcomers, who go to the resident school, which follows a good and consistent curriculum. All the others go to school outside of the institution.
Among all the heat, there were two days of only 72 degrees Fahrenheit, but they remained dry. Over here, they call this a cold front. We are sitting outside every night in our roof garden.
Give a child a chance, bring balance to the world!
